Overview of Redwood

Scandinavian Redwood Pinus Sylvestris, also know as Scots pine, is straight grained softwood with a medium and even texture, with clearly defined growth rings formed as a result of the species dense late-wood growth. The species growth is depending on the local regional climate.

Co2RedWood^® the Redwood we supply is grown in Scandinavian and usually has pale yellow brown to reddish-brown heartwood, with a narrow band of creamy-white to yellow sap wood. This colour range is normal with tress grown in a more northerly European climate rather than tree grown the further south in Europe. The growth rings are clearly marked by the denser late wood. Like all timber the quality texture, density, size is dependent by the conditions of growth i.e. climate, soil, elevation, etc. Because it is widely grown two pieces of Redwood grown in different parts of the world can appear quite different. The workability of Redwood is also regional dependent.

The Scandinavian climate means the tree grow slower and are therefore harder than the equivalent Redwood grown in the UK. Durability: TRADA class 3 durable – therefore application of an oil (stains and paint) is recommended before installation.

Our Redwood is PEFC Programme for the Endorsement of Forest, compliant. PEFC is a world wide umbrella organization endorsing a national forest certification systems. And FSC Forest Stewardship Council. We only supply the best grade strangely referred to as Unsorted grade Scandinavian Redwood.

Generally tress grow to around 30m in hight and have a diameter of about 1m, but they can grow larger.

As a rule of thumb when you hear redwood describe as Scots pine they are home grow in the UK, while Scandinavian or European Redwood relates to imported timber.

Working Properties

Generally (dependent upon the size, knots, and resin present) the redwood works well with hand and machine tools, the wood is capable of a smooth, clean finish, and can be glued, stained, varnished, painted satisfactorily, nailed or screws.

Good strength-to-weight ratio with a weight of dried timber is around 510 kg/m³.

Strength

For its weight, the timber is considered strong and moderately hard, although UK plantation-grown timber is generally slightly softer and weaker than that from other sources.

It has a density 450 lbf (2,000 N) on the Janka Hardness scale.

Usages

Exterior and interior cladding, fencing, a hole host of different exterior and interior applications. It is often the specified for structural beams and furniture, stairs name just a few examples.
